Successful Potty Training
1. Signs of Readiness
Observe Your Child: Look for signs that your child is ready, such as showing interest in the bathroom, staying dry for longer periods, or expressing discomfort with wet nappies.
Age Isn’t Everything: Every child is different. Some may be ready as early as 18 months, while others may take much longer.
2. Introduce the Potty
Gradual Approach: Familiarise your child with the potty/ toilet gradually. Let them explore it and sit on it fully clothed.
Consistency: Create a routine by incorporating potty time into their daily schedule.
3. Choose the Right Equipment
Potty Chair or Seat: Decide whether to use a standalone potty chair or a seat that fits on the regular toilet.
Fun Designs: Opt for colourful or themed potties to make it exciting for your child.
4. Positive Reinforcement
Celebrate Success: Praise your child when they use the potty successfully. Positive reinforcement encourages them to continue.
Avoid Punishment: Accidents happen. Avoid scolding or punishing your child; it can create anxiety.
5. Consistency and Patience
Stay Consistent: Use the same words for pee and poop consistently. Be patient and gentle.
Accidents Happen: Expect accidents and handle them calmly. Clean up without making a fuss.
6. Transition to Underwear
Ditch Nappies: Once your child is comfortable with the potty, transition to underwear during the day.
Night time Training: Night time dryness may take longer. Use pull-up pants or waterproof sheets.Make it stand out.
