1. Signs of Readiness

  • Observe Your Child: Look for signs that your child is ready, such as showing interest in the bathroom, staying dry for longer periods, or expressing discomfort with wet nappies.

  • Age Isn’t Everything: Every child is different. Some may be ready as early as 18 months, while others may take much longer.

2. Introduce the Potty

  • Gradual Approach: Familiarise your child with the potty/ toilet gradually. Let them explore it and sit on it fully clothed.

  • Consistency: Create a routine by incorporating potty time into their daily schedule.

3. Choose the Right Equipment

  • Potty Chair or Seat: Decide whether to use a standalone potty chair or a seat that fits on the regular toilet.

  • Fun Designs: Opt for colourful or themed potties to make it exciting for your child.

4. Positive Reinforcement

  • Celebrate Success: Praise your child when they use the potty successfully. Positive reinforcement encourages them to continue.

  • Avoid Punishment: Accidents happen. Avoid scolding or punishing your child; it can create anxiety.

5. Consistency and Patience

  • Stay Consistent: Use the same words for pee and poop consistently. Be patient and gentle.

  • Accidents Happen: Expect accidents and handle them calmly. Clean up without making a fuss.

6. Transition to Underwear

  • Ditch Nappies: Once your child is comfortable with the potty, transition to underwear during the day.
